John and Karen
John Borden and Karen Figel were part of our promotions department. Karen was instrumental in managing all the promotion campaigns and daily promotions for WOKR. Karen and I worked closely selecting music for promotion, production and news on-air. Karen eventually left to work in public relations.

John originally started in the production department doing the routine jobs such as camera operator and editing. It wasn’t long before his editing skills became apparent. For years he was responsible for our promotional “look” on the air. You might have seen some pretty unusual promotions, and found them funny or clever, that was John’s work. He made promotions that drew the average viewer’s attention.

John also somehow got pulled into making our Christmas funny reel every year. It was usually based on a movie theme and he would coax employees to do all sorts of strange things for the camera to make his specials so unique. My favorite funny reel scene is a shot of the director in the control room shouting over the headsets, “camera three is too hot.” Then John cut to a shot of camera three with a flaming skillet on top of the camera. John eventually went on to work at Dixon Schwabl as creative editor.
